No two surveying projects are exactly alike.
One week may involve working on an advanced bridge construction project beside a river. These are three recent examples of the surveying work completed by Geo Vision Surveying Inc across Brantford, Hamilton and Cambridge, Ontario.
Although each project presented a different challenge, they shared one requirement: the construction and design teams needed dependable field information they could confidently use.
Construction Surveying on a Brantford Bridge Project
One of our recent Brantford assignments involved continued construction surveying on a bridge project that has now reached an advanced stage.
Construction surveying is not limited to setting a few points before construction begins. As a structure progresses, additional measurements, layout and verification may be needed to support subsequent stages of work.
On a bridge project, the relationship between the design and the constructed structure is especially important. Structural components installed later in the project may depend on the position and elevation of work completed earlier.
Using Trimble surveying equipment, Geo Vision Surveying Inc provided field support to help the construction team continue progressing with reliable positioning information.
There is also a particularly rewarding aspect to this type of work. Surveyors often become involved when a project exists primarily as engineering drawings, coordinates and layout points. Returning later and seeing those points transformed into an actual structure provides a clear demonstration of how surveying contributes to construction.
Why Construction Surveying Matters as a Project Advances
Accurate construction surveying can support a project by helping teams:

Topographic Surveying on a Developed Site in Hamilton
Our Hamilton project presented a completely different working environment.
Topographic surveying is often pictured as work taking place on a large, open site. In reality, many projects occur within already developed areas.
This Hamilton site included existing buildings, mature trees, landscaping, fences and other features that affected how the fieldwork could be completed.
A topographic survey records the elevations and visible physical features of a site so that engineers, designers and other project professionals have an accurate representation of the existing conditions.
On a developed site, this can require careful instrument positioning and a systematic approach to ensure important features are captured despite restricted sightlines and access.
Using Trimble surveying equipment, we collected the field information required to document the site conditions and support the next stage of planning.
What Can a Topographic Survey Document?
Depending on the requirements of the project, topographic fieldwork may document information such as:
- ground elevations;
- changes in slope;
- buildings and structures;
- walkways and hard surfaces;
- vegetation and significant site features;
- drainage-related features; and
- other visible conditions relevant to design.
The value of the survey is not simply the number of points collected. The goal is to provide an accurate and useful representation of the site so the design team can make informed decisions.
Grading Survey and Building Foundation Layout in Cambridge
The third project took us to Cambridge for grading survey work and building foundation layout.
This project demonstrated another reality of construction surveying: field conditions do not always cooperate with the schedule.
Following excavation, significant water had accumulated in portions of the site. Some of the foundation layout stakes were positioned in areas surrounded by standing water.
The site conditions made movement and layout more difficult, but the construction team still required reliable horizontal positions and elevations before proceeding.
Using established survey control and Trimble equipment, the required foundation positions and grading information were transferred to the site.
Why Foundation Layout Is Important
Building foundation layout connects the design drawings to the physical excavation.
The surveyor establishes the required positions so the construction team knows where the building elements are intended to be constructed.
Errors at this stage can affect later work, which is why careful setup, verification and communication are important.
A building layout may establish information used for:
- foundation corners;
- structural lines;
- offsets;
- reference points;
- elevations; and
- other construction positions required by the project.
Grading Information Matters Too
Horizontal position is only part of the construction picture.
Elevation and grading information helps the project team understand how the proposed work relates vertically to the surrounding site.
Accurate grading information can support drainage planning, construction elevations and coordination between the building and surrounding surfaces.
Different Sites Require Different Surveying Approaches
These three projects demonstrate why surveying is not a one-method service.
The Brantford bridge required construction support on an advanced infrastructure project.
The Hamilton topographic survey required working carefully around an existing developed environment.
The Cambridge project required adapting foundation layout and grading work to a wet excavation.
The instruments provide accurate measurements, but effective surveying also requires field judgment, planning, reliable control and the ability to adjust the working method to the conditions encountered on site.
