What was needed
The owner needed the proposed foundation set out on site from the CAD file, first for the excavation and then at the foundation corners.
The surveying work we carried out
- Office preparation and layout calculations from the CAD file
- Stage 1: foundation offsets for the excavation
- Stage 2: pins at the foundation corners
Our site photos show the excavated footing trenches with orange layout marks.
Site conditions
Our site photos show excavated footing trenches in wet soil on a residential lot, beside a wooden fence and an existing house, with orange safety fencing along part of the excavation.
Methods and equipment
The work was carried out with a Spectra Focus robotic total station on a tripod beside the trenches. Positions calculated in the office from the CAD file were set out in the field and marked with orange paint.
Deliverables
- Offset stakes for the excavation
- Pins and paint marks at the foundation corners
- Layout calculations from the CAD file
Why the layout was set in two stages
Setting the layout in two stages keeps the reference marks out of the way of the excavator, then puts exact corner positions in the trench once it is dug, ready for the footings to be formed.
