What was needed

New work at the front of an existing house had to be built where the design placed it and fit the existing house, entrance and grades. The work included concrete block walls, stone steps and a prepared gravel base. The project also needed a measured record of what was built and of the ground around it.

The surveying work we carried out

  • Construction layout for the new front-yard work at the residential property
  • As-built survey of the new construction, including the concrete block walls, the stone steps at the entrance and the gravel base
  • Topographic survey of the site’s existing grades and features

Site conditions

Our site photo shows a two-storey brick house with new stone steps at the front entrance. It also shows an L-shaped concrete block wall, capped and covered with plastic, and a compacted gravel base marked with orange paint lines. There are stacked stone slabs on a pallet, exposed soil and mature trees.

How layout and as-built surveys support a residential build

On residential hardscape and foundation work, layout taken from the design lets the crew build walls, steps and paved areas in the right place and at the right height before finishes go on. An as-built survey then records what was actually built. A topographic survey records the grades and features around it. Together they let the design team check the finished work against the plans and work from real measurements for the next stage.
