What was needed

The client needed a topographic survey of two properties, recording the existing ground and the site features around the buildings.

The surveying work we carried out

  • Topographic survey fieldwork on the paved rear lots and the parking area
  • Picking up all relevant topographic features on both properties, including existing ground, pavement edges, landscaped beds and building faces

The fieldwork took more than one field day.

Site conditions

Our site photos show paved rear lots and a parking area between older brick and block buildings, with wooden fences, landscaped beds, patched and uneven asphalt, puddles after rain, and a narrow lane behind the buildings. Setups had to be placed where the instrument could see along the building faces and across the pavement.

Methods and equipment

The fieldwork was carried out with a robotic total station on a tripod, set up on the pavement and at the edge of the landscaped beds to record the existing ground and features.

Deliverables

  • A topographic plan of the existing conditions on both properties

How a topographic plan is used

On developed lots like these, an accurate record of existing grades, pavement and building positions gives designers a measured base for planning changes and drainage.
