Residential Foundation Layout in Hagersville

What was needed

The owner needed the new foundation walls marked on the ground in the right place relative to the existing building and the client-provided drawings.

The surveying work we carried out

• Surveyed the existing building and set survey control on site
• Prepared layout calculations from the client-provided drawings
• Set foundation wall pins in the excavated footing trench

The excavation itself was carried out by others, so excavation stakes were not part of our scope.

Site conditions

Our site photos show a residential lot with an existing house close to the work area, a wooden fence beside the instrument setup, a gravel work area and an excavated footing trench.

Methods and equipment

The work was carried out with a robotic total station on a tripod, set up over survey control on site. Layout positions were calculated in advance from the drawings and then set out in the trench as pins marked with orange paint.

How the survey supported the next stage

Foundation wall pins give the forming crew fixed points to measure from, so the walls can be checked against the design before concrete is placed. Moving a pin takes minutes; moving a poured footing does not.
